A new project? I think so…

I’m thinking about starting a new project. You see, the thing is that I am a bit of an avgeek. I have model aircraft in my room, my own personal self-hosted flight tracker, and so on. But I have since come to the realisation that I don’t really have a great system for logging any flights that I take. I know there are existing services out there (I believe the main public one to be myFlightradar24, self-hosted options include Jetlog that I’ve just come across on Reddit), but none really seem to satisfy what I want: a flight logging system where people can keep track of who, what, when and where they flew with the ability to share this with others or keep it private. Furthermore, one of my friends recently introduced me to the Letterboxd platform for reviewing films. I also think it might be a good idea to incorporate the ranking (1-5 stars, planes, or whatever) into this?

Anyway, I’m writing about this here so I can keep track of my own progress on this (and to try and hold myself to finishing this completely!), and I intended to post all of my investigations, progress updates, etc. so if you’re interested, please do keep an eye on here every now and then. I’ll be following the same structure as previous projects I’ve created for my academic life, as it worked (yes, that’s the reason).

Who am I making this for?

However frequently or infrequently you fly (or don’t! You might just be intrigued), this tool will probably be of interest to you, especially if you enjoy looking at fancy stats or just logging/ranking/rating things.

What’s next?

Reseach. I’ll try my best to document everything I come across in various blog posts, so stay tuned. Then, it’ll be onto specifications, design, the actual programming parts, testing before finally releasing (hopefully, if I get that far… make sure I keep my word!).
